Join us for two thought-provoking talks on cyberformance, including Helen Varley Jamieson's "Adventures in Cyberformance" and Christina Papagiannouli's "Cyberformance adaptations: 'Translating' theatre from stage to cyberstage."
Helen Varley Jamieson:
Pioneering cyberformance artist Helen Varley Jamieson takes us back to the turn of the century and the beginnings of her adventures in cyberformance - before social media, before YouTube, before the Covid19 pandemic. She will talk about how she entered this field, why she coined the term “cyberformance”, and how she and her collaborators created the cyberformance platform UpStage in 2003. Leaping forward to today, she will introduce the online collaborative project Mobilise/Demobilise and the rebuild of UpStage, which will be launched in September 2021.
Christina Papagiannouli:
Ten years ago, I directed my first cyberformance as part of my research on Political Cyberformance: The Etheatre Project, published in 2016 as a monograph by Palgrave Macmillan. Cyberian Chalk Circle (2011) was a cyberformance adaptation of Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle on UpStage platform. Although I experimented with different cyberformance genres, in 2019 I returned to cyberformance adaptations with Waiting for Brexit (2019) and Jeux de Massacre (2019). My talk will reflect on my cyberformance practice-as-research journey, focusing on adapting and ‘translating’ theatre from stage to cyberstage. I will also talk about my collaboration with PAPALANGKI Theatre on UBUmaterial (2021), an Instagram performative archive based on Jarry’s Ubu Roi.
